Car won't start - strange electrical issue

Hey Everyone...been having some on again / off again starting issues, wondering if anyone has experienced something similar.

Background info:
Battery is only a year old and no lights have been left on to drain it.

The symptoms:
First happened about 2 months ago, about the first cold snap here in Jersey. Pressed the unlock button on the key, nothing happens; try again and nothing; finally the doors unlock i get in close the door. Put the key in the ignition and everything seems dead. Open drivers side door and the gauge needles twitch; close the door, turn the key and the car starts fine. Happened only once, and worked fine for the next 2 months.

This week the car sat for about 5 days in very cold weather; iPod was left hooked up to the DICE module - not sure if that matters, just don't want to leave anything out. Went out to start it and it was dead. Hooked up to a charger, car turned over fine, took it for a long drive and have been using it daily for the past 3 days - turns over strong with no issues.

Went out to start it today, doors unlock, put the key in, the needles start twitching and buzzing and the car won't start. try the "open the door trick" and still nothing. open the passenger side door, close it and the car starts, albeit with this bizarre buzzing from from the needles/dash area. take it for a run around the block, car is beeping like when the door is open and the key is in the ignition (all doors were closed). pull it back in the driveway and it's dead again, although the gas gauge and temp gauge are stuck in the positions they were in when the car was on.

Going to hook up the charger again, but it seems like it's something other than the battery to me...

thoughts??

i'm wondering if the battery is just not holding a charge, although i think that it would have died quicker than 3 days of daily driving. When it died last year i replaced it with the autozone one that everyone recommends...it's been solid until now....

next place i look is at the alternator to see if that is not recharging the battery properly while the car is running...

i'm guessing it's one of the 2...that dash buzzing issue is bizarre and has only occurred when the car wouldn't start...i did disconnect the DICE unit at the cd changer connection point just to see what does or doesn't happen, but if an iPod is not connected i don't really think it's the issue...

so to follow up...car was completely dead and wouldn't even respond with the charger. dash would light up but that was it...called Dave at Motor Works West, he suggested doing the battery first before i brought it to him since it was only a year old...called autozone and they said no problem, just bring in the battery, warranty is stored in the computer at the time of purchase...so i went out w/a few sockets and a phillips head to remove it...i checked the connections a bit before removing and after tugging on the negative line a bit, the trunk light suddenly came on...i opened the door and the dome light came on...dash lit up but it still wouldn't start...i snugged down the connection, got in and it started right the fk up. unreal. ran it for about 5 minutes, gave it some mild revs then shut it down. key works again - doors lock/unlock. got in, started it up and it turned over as strong as ever.

figured i'd share - don't overlook the obvious like I did because you think it must be something more complex. sometimes even these cars can be fixed with a simple solution (or some common sense. doh)!
