One cylinder misfiring

Hi,

so yesterday when I stopped at lights, my E46 had very rough idle and then the acceleration was very bad, not smooth. I "restarted" the car and it was ok, until next lights, the same again... turned off, started it and ok... so when in gear, it´s ok, but when on neutral it get´s bad and won´t be ok until I turn it off and on again... I went to my mechanic, his software wrote (several times) that the 4th cylinder is misfiring... we changed the plugs, no change... so we were sure it´s the ignition coil... but it didn´t help neither... so we changed this thing that brings fuel to the cylinder (sorry, don´t know what was it called and I can´t find it on realoem)... it seemed to be ok, no errors, car ran on idle for about half an hour (I repeat, before that the problem would be there almost immediately when on idle), I drove all the way home (through the downtown= many lights) and no problem... but just before my house that happened again
So... as pretty much everything has been changed on that cylinder, is it some sensor error or something? What do you guys think?
Thanks, really don´t know what to do now...

Yes, we did, no change... only change of that thing, injector maybe, seemed to help... but...
No, check engine is off, car otherwise runs excellent, no other problems (except oil burning, but these 6 cylinders do burn some oil, don´t the mileage is 230K KMs)...

I had a bunch of misfiring codes myself and my car had the same symptoms as yours. The cause of my problem was my battery which was not putting out the amperage it should have been and so it would throw many codes along with the complete loss of power at lights. If I restarted the car it would run fine until I stopped again. Go to a autoparts store and have the battery checked.

Good luck

So... only cylinder three, poorboys? So maybe it´s the battery after all... will take it tomorrow to my mechanic and see... thanks, will let you know tomorrow...

But just in case- what other thing may be causing this problem? Maybe some sensor or something?

Chas, yes, exactly.
Sorry, I don´t understand the plug boot part... Could you explain it here with the part numbers? You mean whether the part number 2 was replaced too?

Sorry for that bad link...
Yes, we replaced the whole thing, including that rubber boot...

Update:

So I tried changing the battery... Didn´t help... It ALWAYS happens when waiting on lights (never when in gear)... what the hell is wrong?
I think it´s something with the software (as it happens only in neutral and is ok after restart). What should I do?

Thx, this forum is my only hope...

I´ve done compression test about 4 times during the last year as well as full engine tests (just wanted to eliminate some possible bad reasons of my car burning oil, it seems to be ok, these engine do burn oil) - no problem there... The engine seems to be 100% ok, the car was bought new so absolutely no abuse (as cold engine redlining etc.)... until it´s hit by the misfire (it´s like by pressing a button- in a second it gets bad)- then only restart helps...

Well I just took a coil from another car (didn´t pay for it) and the same with the battery.
Anyway, that doesn´t solve my broblem now... is there any possibility of "reinstalling" the software? I bet that´s the problem...

Update: So guys, since nothing (spark plugs, coil, injector) helps and it´s happening only when idling, there is probably something with the software... There are no other codes, only this damn 4th cylinder misfire code... Now we will rewrite the software, maybe that will help? If not, than it´s the main unit saying goodbye, right?:banghead:
